The Pirelli Cyber Tyre, equipped with an internal sensor, will in future supply the car with data relative to the tyre model, kilometers clocked, dynamic load and, for the first time, situations of potential danger on road surfaces, from the presence of water to poor grip. This information will enable the car to adapt its control and driving assistance systems, greatly improving the level of safety, comfort and performance.

Dat laatste lukt beter met concrete pilootprojecten dan met spraakmakende voorbeelden uit Silicon Valley.”

In short, due to the new technologies, spectrum and frequencies it uses, 5G has several benefits over 4G; higher speeds, less latency, capacity for a larger number of connected devices (4000 vs 1.000.000 devices/km2), less interference and better efficiency.

Researchers from the University of Hamburg are developing a Slic3r modification that improves print surface quality using Nonplanar layers. Printing in three dimensions simultaneously it results in smooth surfaces with no stair-stepping effect.

Huawei Combines NB-IoT Device Soc With NOWI’s Energy Harvesting PMIC to Enable New IoT Applications

(Soc = System on a Chip, NB-Iot = Narrow Band Iot, PMIC = Power Management Integrated Circuit)

Power has proven to be a bottleneck in the adoption of many IoT applications, with battery maintenance or power cabling reducing the ROI of an IoT system significantly.

Battery life in many use-cases is shorter than the application life, thus requiring maintenance during system usage and thereby greatly increasing IoT total cost of ownership.
IoT nodes are typically distributed in remote or difficult to access areas, making cables impossible and changing batteries even more expensive.

NOWI’s energy harvesting technology can power virtually any small IoT device (and fit into it) and allows them to run without changing batteries during up to 15 years.

Study Shows Most Companies Have IoT Plans but Aren’t Sure How to Achieve Them

“The top four implementation barriers for organizations overall are cost (37%), security (37%), lack of expertise (36%) and poor understanding of benefits (35%).”

In the IoT projects we encounter, we see all kinds of mistakes, but a poor understanding of the benefits is the top one. We find companies not being able to see the benefits in a different perspective or business model. It’s our job then to take them back to the drawing board and help them open up their mind.

Another one of the challenges with IoT projects is that people get so hung up on the wrong part of the device-value that they kill a project in its infancy. Quite often that last bit of savings, you squeezed out of your hardware cost, limits the life-span of your devices and hence it’s long term value. When you are getting started in IoT, there will be so much more you will want to do with that device one year from now, which you never thought off today. Or it could simply be that the next security update needs that extra bit of power which renders your device nealry useless.
